Post for Friday, 9/23

Hello All,

As we discussed in class on Wednesday, the thesis for the in-class essays must make your position clear, and it should carry with it implied (or explicit) reasons for support.

For this post, craft a thesis statement you could use if you were writing an essay in response to the following quote:

"Government is an unnecessary evil. Human beings, when accustomed to taking responsibility for their own behavior, can cooperate on a basis of mutual trust and helpfulness."

      --Fred Woodworth

  1. Government is not a necessary factor to a successful country although a government does account for much of a successful country's structure and stability.

  2. According to Fred Woodworth Government is a pointless factor. People when taught to take responsibility for their own actions, can join together and form a foundation of mutual trust and helpfulness. Woodworth’s claim is right in saying that people can come together and make a decision; however he neglects the fact that we also need government’s involvement in making certain decisions because leaving everything for the people to deicide would essentially create chaos.

  3. Some, like Fred Woodworth, believe that human beings are capable of cooperation based on trust and helpfulness and therefore do not need government. However, government provides Human beings a path to collective organization and acceptable rules of behavior that might not be so visible if there was no governance to dictate what is and is not allowed in society.

  4. Societies can either have a government that provides structure or be ruled by someone who just took over. Fred Woodworth states that government is unnecessary because societies can collaborate without the government’s intervention. However, Woodworth’s claim is invalid because government not only regulates and promotes social contracts, but it also keeps society safe, gives people rights and responsibilities, and grants justice.

  5. According to Fred Woodworth, the necessity of the government is inadequate, because people can form unity based on trust and helpfulness and function alone. With that being said Woodworth's claim is inaccurate because human beings aren't able to have the proper structure and function correctly without the guidance of the government overseeing it.

  6. Humans can govermentment for themselves. Acoording with Fred Woodworth the goverment is not necessary because each human is responsable for their behavior and coperation. Human needs to be coperatibe, responsable and hard worked to improve every society and eliminate evil goverment.

  7. Woodworth's radical statement provides a narrow and inaccurate view of human nature, which is naturally selfish and instinctive, and also disregards the unity and organization that a government provides.

  8. With no government, the world will be defenseless against alien attack.

  9. While Woodworth is correct in exposing the negative side of government, he fails to address the need for structure and order, which only the government can provide. In addition, Woodworth provides a false view of natural human behavior. In essence, a society with no higher organization is a jungle.

  10. According to Woodworth having government is a redundant factor. Once individuals customize their own conducts, society can operate with conjoint trust and effectiveness. However, Woodworth’s claim is unbalanced because governments enforce laws, legislate new ones, and intercede conflicts. Fundamentally a society with no social order will lead to disarray.

  11. Woodworth is inaccurate in that individuals may be honest and of aviail, without government interference, since they hold themselves accountable for their actions. There is always going to be individuals who will not care to take responibility, nor will they give much thought to the outcome of their careless actions. There are people today, even with government interference, who cannot be trusted or of assistance. Therefore, because of those who cannot control themselves, it will lead to utter bedlam.

  12. Woodworth's radical view on government is extremely inconsistent compared to our history's record of government. However his view on society's ability to work together is plausible and is incorporated in the idea of a government.

  13. Woodworth's perspective on government is irrational because not all human beings are responsible, most human beings do not cooperate well with each other, and because of his optimistic view towards human being nature.

  15. According to Woodworth government is not needed and people are able to take responsibility for their own actions. This view is flawed because without government their would be no structure and people need structure so that there is not chaos.

  16. According to Woodworth people can take full responsibility for their own behavior without the need of a government system. Woodworth’s analysis is wrong because government provides law and order; without law and order, people would have different ways of applying their thoughts into a system that would work in unity with others, this would create conflict among people.

  17. Hey Professor Woodman and fellow classmates,

My name is Sandy Torrealba and here is my response to the quote:

Thesis: Although Fred Woodman is correct about the government's over-superiority towards the people, he fails and ignores the fact that without a strucured government our societies would become chaotic, unorganized, and disintegrated.

  18. According to Woodworth, Government in a country can be needless, yet that government architects and delivers establishment to its nation.

  19. According to Woodworth, a nation does not require the presence of a controlling, and all too powerful government. Woodworth claims that because humans are taught to respect and care for one another the need of government is inadequate. However, human beings were never taught how to live peacefully, and without the structure of a government humans beings would constantly be at war with one another.

  20. According to Woodworth, society does not need a government to maintain order. However, Woodworth’s reasoning is invalid as government is an essential necessity to retain control and not all individuals are responsible enough to act upon proper behavior as they hold different definitions of right and wrong and this would lead to a troubled and unorganized society.

  21. Thesis: Woodworth's claim that government is not necessary is misguided because government provides a social safety net, regulates consumer products including the food we eat, builds the roads and bridges we depend on, makes education accessible for everyone, and generally provides stability in the lives of its citizens.

(Ayn Rand a person who despised government and wanted a pure capitalistic society without government oversight sure had no problem taking her government benefits when she needed them to sustain her life and pay for the expensive hospital bill.)

  22. Since not all individuals are able to admit or recognize their mistakes, Woodworth's statement is false because then a government would benefit people by setting rules to help humans work together and form an organized, considerate, and respectful community.

  24. Fred Woodworth states that society does not need a man made executive system in order for individuals to get along, all that is needed is for the nation to take accountability of their own personal behaviors. This assertion can not be credible because in order for civilization to function there must be a higher authority for citizens to conform to.

  25. According to Woodworth, government is an uncessary factor in human's lives. Humans are mature and responsible enough to govern their own behaviors. Although, Woodworth makes a valid point on how humans should been responsible for their own action, he failed to also realize that without a government to ensure order, there will be chaos.

  26. According to Woodworth, Human Beings can successfully operate as a society without the need of a government as long as they are accustomed to taking responsibility for their behavior.

  27. If we lived in a utopian society then, Woodworth’s statement would be plausible. In our society however, government is necessary to avoid chaos.

  28. Woodworth says that government is a unneccessary factor in human lives. Therefore having no government would put a critical responsibility on our attitude and actions. Woodworth statement i believe is false, because we all need structure and someone to lead if not ourselves. Human beings must not learn to complain and make excuses but be able to say "it is what it is" and face whatever challenge and do what they can do about it.

  29. I disagree with Woodworth, government is not evil. Government is needed to provide structure. With structure comes options and opportunities, Without a government we would have no order leaving everyone to do what is best for self

  31. According to Woodworth, human beings are capable of maintaining a successful and peaceful society with out a government due to their ability to have faith and willingness to provide aid to one another. In a perfect world Woodworth's theory would work out and society would be able to sustain itself without a government; but we do not live in a perfect world and human beings need structure and with out it there would be chaos.
