The Club we chose is the Children’s Art Institute. The archetypes that the clubs uses in order to provide a meaningful experience for its current members or majors is the innocent and the creator. The innocent is portrayed by using colors such as white- that by their efforts they succeed,” through the triumph of a kind of simple purity or goodness”- their background which symbolizes purity or goodness. The innocent also uses crayons to employ the image of children; children are associated with coloring. The crayons on the website symbolize the creator because they have the power to create anything imaginable. The creator’s motto is,” if it can be imagined, it can be created.” The difference colors of the crayons spark a views imagination and emotions. The creator accomplishes this by experimenting and unraveling his or her self expression. The web site could improve by using the archetype of the caregiver to appeal to an audience that is fond of children and their artistic side. Moreover, the website could have implemented actual pictures of children’s drawings to appeal to people’s different emotions and attract a vast audience and emphasize the innocent archetype. Although the website could use some twitches, it is overall an effective website.

The teacher education department's website is well organized and has an interesting logo, this website is not exciting and does not appear to draw in new majors. As a current major I do not feel that this website is an appropriate representation of the department. There are no pictures of children, and nothing eye-catching that gives me a sense of pride to be a major in this department. Archetypes do not appear to be evidently used in this website. What should be used is the archetype of the Innocent. People looking at this website want to be teachers, so there should be pictures or clip art of children learning to emphasize the idea of the innocent. It would be helpful to add a colorful background and several pictures to give the page more pop. They should also use the archetype of the sage. By providing a picture of the professors or counselors, new majors would see people they can trust and that will be helpful throughout their college experience. The sage is the idea that “[you] use intelligence and analysis to understand the world,” (Mark & Pearson p. 89). By developing this archetype within the website an overall feeling of professionalism and encouragement would be created.

The website for the Philosophy and religious Studies club is not effective in use of its archetypes for new members, or current members. Nothing has been updated since the 2003/2004. It appears to have once been a useful tool for current members, however there are no archetypes or aesthetically pleasing visuals to draw in new members. The website provides no specific information about the club’s goals. According to Mark and Pearson, “ advertising, in general, attempted to be helpful—to provide some piece of knowledge or wisdom as a kind of “quid pro quo” for the attention of the reader” (p.89-90). There was once valid and useful information for their current members, but it does not provide information for prospective members. The one and only effective archetype is the Sage. First suggestion would be to update the site. Secondly, add more specific detail about the club. A useful archetype would be the Explorer giving prospective members an opportunity to explore the club from the website. Another relevant archetype for this type of club website would be the Magician. Mark and Pearson suggest that “the most consistent images associated with Magicians are signs in the heavens—rainbows, shooting stars, a beautiful galaxy, flying saucers—which tend to reassure us that we are not alone in the universe” (p. 143). Adding this sort of element using pictures, words, or hard facts can give more meaning to the philosophy and religious studies club.

The Department of Criminal Justice’s webpage did a great job containing many different archetypes. The first one is the statue of Lady Justice. She is an archetype that represents the Sage, the motto of ‘the truth will set you free’. She advocates the “discovery of truth” by using “intelligence and analysis to understand the world” (Mark, 89). Another archetype that is used in the Criminal Justice Webpage is the Ruler, represented by the badges shown at the bottom of the page. The ruler’s motto is ‘power isn’t everything. It’s the only thing.’ The ruler is all about control. Mark and Pearson explain that the ruler “create[s] a prosperous successful family, company, or community” (Mark, 245). The badges promise a life of success and community that any person would enjoy. Although the improvements are minimal, the criminal justice department’s webpage could use more archetypes that give examples to specific occupations provided by having this degree. For example, the Hero would be a perfect idealized archetype. The Hero is a person that proves one’s worth through courage and tries to improve the world they are living in. Any job in the criminal justice field needs to have people who are brave and passionate about helping others and one’s community.

An archetype that the theatre department uses to attract new members is the magician. The department has a slideshow of past performances and demonstrations on their department page. In the Hero and the Outlaw, Mark and Pearson state that, “The magician organization utilizes cutting-edge technologies in consciousness, communications, and organizational structures” (p. 153). Through the slideshow we are able to see that the magician is known as the “visionary, catalyst, innovator, charismatic leader, mediator, shaman, healer, or medicine man or woman”. This archetype attracts new members and majors because it appeals to their imagination and interests. Another archetype that the theatre department uses is the jester. The pictures on the slide show us that their main purpose is to entertain and to appeal to our emotions. As stated by Mark and Pearson, “The jester organization makes enjoyment the bottom line” (p. 201). They could have improved their page by using the explorer by placing some of the different plays they have done in the past. Also by showing that the theater department is a place where they can be free to be who they are and explore their different emotions and desires.

The CSUB Judo Club appeals to the inner Explorer. The different techniques taught give the student a sense of individualism. Judo "is rugged and sturdy [, and] is appropriate for use in nature, on the road, or in dangerous settings or occupations" (pg87). The website is very effective. The background is royal blue which makes the judo club logo stand out. There is a lot of information on the site including links to a syllabus to the Judo class and the history of Judo. There is also a link to pictures of the events that the members take part in, as well as, what happens in the classes. The website provides information for people who might be interested in joining. The only things we would change about the site are, to make the pictures on the home page a little bigger, and add more contact information. They should use more of the archetype of the Hero because the goal of Judo is self-defense. The “Levels of the Hero” say that the call comes when someone “tries to intimidate or abuse you” (pg 107).

Archetypes in advertising are used to persuade consumers and create an emotional appeal. The School of Education uses the archetype of the sage and explorer to interest the reader in learning more about the program. The goal of the sage is “to use intelligence and analysis to understand the world” (p.89). The program offers courses based on methods and solid research, taught by experienced faculty. The explorer archetype is premised on “experienc[ing] a better more authentic, more fulfilling life” (p.72). The program offers quality education, convenience, and multiple accreditations to help the individual accomplish their goal. The website can improve by adding photos of individuals teaching in a classroom to help motivate prospective students by emphasizing on the creator archetype. The creator focuses on providing a visual image and by adding photos of children interacting with a teacher in a classroom it adds more value to the site. By using images of children the department would need to use the innocent archetype.

The website our group analyze was the Chicano Studies Department page. The website is effective because it uses the archetpes of sage, explorer, creator, caregiver, ruler and hero. The website is very effective in detailing and stating the requirements for a Bachelor's degree and or minor in chicano studies. It gives related links for students who would like to get involved into the Chicano community or to learn more about the Chicano culture. It is a creator because it is creative and colorful. It shows the history and background of the Chicano. The website shows the ruler archetype: "it is the ruler's job to take responsibility to make life for making life as predictable and stable as possible." This is shown through using the Aztec calender on the website. The Aztec calender symbolizes stability, order, and responsibility of life. It also promotes pride for Chicano students, and invites the Sage thinker to seek and explore a new culture.

To improve the websites, we would like to see the website be filled more. The images and information are off to one side, it would be more effective and interesting if the whole page would be filled. The images and artwork should also have a reference or at least state who they were created by. This would provide for more awareness of the Chicano culture, and stir more pride with Chicano students to see latino names. The archetpe of Creator could be improved by showing the staff that has influence the department, and also show mission statement or motives of the department. The Sage archetype could also be improved by describing more in career possiblities. It does not go into a lot of detail. The careers information for majoring or minoring in Chicano Studies needs to have more information.

According to Mark and Pearson(2001), "If power is that important, then you can bet that one person's success annoys others who have less of it." The Judo club web page is appealing with pictures and a Judo symbol. The club seems to be extremely active, organized, and welcoming. The website is full of upcoming practices, events, and cultural history. The Judo club seems to pull not only Judo hobbyist but also students who wish to learn about a different culture or a hobby that can be applied in the everyday world, not only physically but mentally. The club brings in the archetype of the ruler because of its intriguing emphasis in unity, control, and leadership. Judo also brings in the archetype of the explorer because of the students desire to experience new activities and horizons. The page itself is informative but the background is too blue and may need a better touch up and artistic symbols that go with in the Judo hobby; to attract audiences, the club should emphasize on the archetype of creator because of its powerful, creative, and intelligent approach.

It behoovs the Liberal Studies Department to use archetypes such as the Explorer and Magician because these particular archetypes will appeal to those who have a passion for exploration in terms of the vast avenues of education. Also the Magician becasue "there goal is to make dreams come true" (Pearson,142), which is an ideal goal for any educator.

The Psychology club uses the archetype of sage and regular guy/gal in order to appeal to the student interested in knowing more about psychology. The regular guy/gal archetype, according to (Mark and Pearson 2001,) “provides a good identity for brands whose use helps people belong or feel that they belong” (177). Anyone interested in becoming a member will feel welcome with a sense of belonging because according to the website, if they join students gain skills by “organizing events, and community service, Psychology Club also open doors of opportunity to meet other faulty and students, while pursing the filed of psychology.” The use of sage is evident by the information that is given to students who are interested in joining. Since the sage archetype “encourage customers and clients to think” (100), the psychology homepage has created an abstract symbol as its logo and has posted it in the middle of the page in red.
The way this club provides meaningful experiences for its current members is by the community service and social events they are involved with, such as habitat for humanity, and the M.S walk. Social events also include annual student/faculty parties, social trips, and meetings. By being involved in these events its members “build leadership and communication skills, while expanding their understanding and knowledge of psychology.” While these archetypes are good, the website is lacking color and more pictures that would be more attractive to possible members.

  13. I reviewed the services for students with disabilities department web page, I found it to be really plain and boring. It merely listed their services and phone numbers. The only archetype they had was the nationally recognized blue wheel chair to signify the handicapped. I think they could have added some art showing people with different abilities doing normal fun things. Showing that they were normal people too
