Is it truly possible to believe in love and is it also possible to exercise faith in things that are not seen… only felt? Historically, there have been many songs that use symbols to communicate the message of love and support from our friends and family, intimate lover and from deity. Humans tend to strive to find companions to alleviate loneliness and messages of hope sustain us in that process. Everyday life is a very difficult thing to endure, and songs provide an outlet to convey the message that we do not struggle alone and that through faith we will always have support. Words have power: in that they remind the listener to never give up, keep going forward and that support will always be there when it is needed the most. In the song “The Promise,” by the 1980’s group, When in Rome, messages of hope and concern are the prevailing theme that is unwound as each word rolls forth, and faith is the underlying message that is found within the lyrical text.

Love is the strong emotions one feels for someone that they cannot bear to lose. Songs are a way to express feelings and emotions on a level relatable to the general population. The themes of songs allow the listener to feel what the artist felt or experienced and have a way to express them selves. The symbols and archetypes used throughout the song help the artist convey their meanings and feelings in a way that suits their style. The song “Black” by Pearl Jam uses the symbols of earth, sun, and the color black to explain how our view of life changes when the one we love leaves us.

  3. Mahatma Gandhi was consistently fighting for peace and he walked a road for peace by living it and practicing it every day, it was his life mission and devotion to make the world more peaceful. Songs use themes such as roads and journeys to show the personal journeys that people travel on. These travels people take are not just personal, but also social issues people are fighting for and trying to implement in society. Many songs try and make light on the struggle, commitment and work it takes to work towards a perfect society where people can live in harmony. Songs also show the need for this fight and journey for the perfect world to live in. Damian Marley uses the symbols of the road to convey the journey and fight that it takes to achieve peace; he also uses the idea of devastation and depression in society to show the need for this journey toward a peaceful world.

  4. What is the best way to escape reality? Music in many forms can help humans escape the drudgery of daily life and enter into a world of fantasy. Music can help people get in touch with their inner self, and the desires that are hidden within. Music can tell a story of human passion, love, and fantasy. Music uses symbols and archetypes to relay deeper meanings. Archetypes are universal symbols that have deep innate connections to a persons being. Andrew Loyd Webber’s “Music of the night” uses the symbols of Spirit, dream, falling and night to create deeper meaning. Webber uses the symbols of dreams and darkness to convey the theme of abandoning reality, and letting your inner desires and fantasies take over.

Perfection is having no error or fault. As a child, I always dreamed of living in a place where I had every toy that I had ever wanted. I could eat anything I wanted. There would never be any fighting between siblings or friends. Everyone would get along. To me this was the perfect place to live. Music is a way for many artists to express their true feelings, hopes, and dreams. Many people see music as a form of escape or comfort. They may find comfort in listening to a song that has the meaning of what they may be going through. A symbol represents an idea, concept, or emotion. An archetype is a form of a symbol that is universal. Artists use symbols or archetypes to create a deeper meaning behind each song. In the song “If I Can Dream,” Elvis Presley uses the symbols of peace, sun, and hope to convey the theme of perfect and living in a perfect place.

For the duration of our lifetime, we are faced with many choices and whichever we select will define us for the rest of our lives. We listen to music for the reason that some songs relate to our personal life and we feel some kind of comfort knowing that we’re not alone in our problems. Songs are meaningful because they have meaning, a general theme, and send out a message for the whole world to hear. A symbol is a representation of an emotion or a lifestyle. Songs use symbols to further define the meaning the song. In the song “Hotel California,” The Eagles use symbols such as a highway, driving towards a light, nighttime, hearing voices, and dancing to convey, in the listener, the thought that we sometimes makes wrong choices and when we realize that it may be too late to go back and fix our lives.

  8. What does it mean to fall into the ocean without a destination? Songs are used to explain an inner feeling; people try to express themselves through songs and different types of music. People listen to different types of music because songs within a musical category are full of meaning and emotions which are expressed by different symbols and archetypes. Symbols are ideas, images, and figures which represent a deeper more complex idea, songs use symbols to make different statements and influence the listener’s perspective. In his song, “Into the Ocean,” Blue October uses the ocean, the sun, waves, and masculinity as symbols to convey a feeling of loss and giving up but finding peace within oneself for the loss.

  9. Nick had been addicted to drugs for many years, until eventually he hit bottom. Thankfully, with the help of family and friends he found the voice with in himself to brake free from drugs. Music helps us express our feelings and thoughts as well as share our hardships and joys of life. Songs use lyrics, or words, which have a universal meaning, archetype, so that we are all able to relate and understand the meaning of the song. The song "Voice Within" by Christina Aguilera uses many symbols --such as world, dreams, journey, fall, fly, strength and voice -- to convey that we all have the strength with in ourselves to overcome the struggles of life. Have you make mistakes that have altered your life? Where do you look for help to deal with these mistakes? Religion? Family? Within Yourself? A song is a combination of lyrics and music that conveys an idea or belief. A simple song can just be for entertainment, but at the same time songs can help to cope with problems in one’s life and provide comfort within yourself. Just like poetry, a song uses various methods to portray the idea and its meaning in a impactful way that can related to its listeners. One of the forms is the use of symbols or archetypes. A symbol is an object, concept, or idea that can stand for something more meaningful. Although symbols can portray an idea, archetypes can convey a universal idea instead of a personal. In the song “my own prison” by creed, the author, Scott Stapp, uses the symbols of a lion, the sun, light, the cross, and the idea of a prison to convey the idea of a person being trapped by his own mistakes and his hope of repentance through religion.

Ralph Waldo Emerson emphasizes, "Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising up every time we fail". Music is a form of inspiration in which numerous opportunities can open up. Music is able to express feeling and attitudes towards a given situation. A song can be used to explain the life story of an individual in order for others to understand the meaning of the experiences encountered in life. A symbol is a representation of the main important ideas in which a song focuses on to convey the truth. Lil Rob argues in his song, “Neighborhood Music” the symbols of living in a neighborhood in which music is a factor in leaving behind failure into a successful life journey and never forgetting where you come from.

A storm is a violent weather phenomenon involving high winds and rains. Songs often allow musicians to express their feelings toward a myriad of subjects. Though musicians communicate their thoughts through the notes and chords of the music, many pieces have poetry within the song to further convey the message of the artist. This poetry often is universal, containing archetypes and other universal icons to express itself to multiple generations of people from all walks of life. Tally Hall’s Spring and a Storm explains creation and its eternal cycle through metaphors of rain and storms.

  13. The meaning of peace is self confront inside your own self. The song is words and thought, melody with a lot of rhythm that can touch the heart and bring peace to ones heart or mind. The meaning is really what it relates to you. The message is one that is given that is powerful and has meaning to it. The concept is that we can relate or even agree to what the song writer is saying in the words of the song. The symbols and archetypes are the universal way of ones self expression to the way the feel. kevin petetan

A war is a violent struggle whether spiritual or physical. CeCe Winans sings about waging war against the enemy. The Devil is full of evil and is always trying to steal from us. Music can be used to tell a story about ones life and the experiences that they have had to face. It is a way of life that uses deep rooted symbols by artist, to get their story across. Many times music is so deep, that you can’t take everything that is being said so literal. In the song waging war, CeCe winans uses battleground, unseen enemies, and God to convey the message of fighting evil.

  15. I been to most of the beaches in California and none of them reflect the California illusion of beautiful girls, surfers, or sunshine days. On the contrary California beaches are cold and you are lucky to catch a sunny summer day. Girls don’t wear bikinis and the tan skin comes from a tanning bed or spray. Anyone that has lived in California would articulate that most California songs are a myth written to show a side of California that doesn’t exist. Katie Perry took her “California Girls” song to a whole new level of California fantasy life by saying that, “You could travel the world, but nothing comes close to the Golden Coast” she is very wrong.

God is like oxygen: we need Him to live. Music is more than hearing melody, is more than reading lyrics, and is more than feeling sentiments: music transcends the five senses. Music answers complex questions. Moreover, music is written by men, therefore, every piece of music has something to say about humans. Also, these meanings are created through the use of archetypes, which is why songs are sometimes translated into different languages. Furthermore, there are two types of music; music for the world, and music for God. Music for God conveys the concept that He lives and loves us. As a result, Matt Redman sings the song “You Never let go” conveying the theme that God holds us in every moment of our lives; he does this through the use of symbols: walk, perfect love, evil, glorious light, praise.

When I was young my older sister and I could not see eye to eye. As the years passed my sister and I formed a bond that cannot be broken by anything. Music is melodic sounds that people listen to and songs are words that are assembled by the artist to create a message to the listener. People tend to listen to music because the sounds can calm them down if they are feeling stressed or need time to think. Music or songs can be meaningful depending on the message the artist is trying to convey and how the listener interprets the lyrics. Symbols and archetypes are used to project an image or thing that has important values or meanings. Songs use symbols to allow the listener know the value and the meaning of the song. The artist uses parts of the body and nature symbols to convey the theme of the song to the connection of parent and child.

  18. Love is passionate, intoxicating and painful. In music, artists use many symbols and archetypes to explain their emotions and life. They develop meanings and situations that relate to themselves and others in society. Music inspires, motivates and encourages people to keep moving on with their inner issues. In the song “Kiss from a Rose”, the artist Seal, uses the symbols of a rose, tower, kiss, pain and love to express the meaning that a woman’s love is like the beauty of a rose.

Is distance love worth waiting for? Music is life, it accompanies us no matter what feeling we have and going through. People listen to music for different reasons, but usually they all listen to music to feel better. Every song is different they give different meanings and can put someone is a different mood; a song can remind you of someone of the hard times putting you in a sad mood, a song can cheer someone up and put them in a good mood. Songs use symbols and archetypes to describe the meaning of words and give the listener and example of what the song means. Plain White T’s show in their song, “Hey there Delilah”, that distance and love symbols convey real love is worth waiting for.

Could you forgive the person who broke your hear? Music is interpreted in different ways depending on who one is. It is a beautiful way of expression and connection to the rest of the world. Music can also be used as a form of therapy during the hardest times of ones life. Songs use archetypes so that different people from different culture can relate to the meaning of a song. Symbols are used in songs so that they can be interpreted to different individuals in different situations. A song could have a different meaning to each person who reads it because symbols are interpreted in different ways. Christina Perri attempts to describe and explain how she feels about the person she once loved broken her heart. He has returned to find her and take her back, she attempt to explain the internal conflict that she is having with herself. She uses the symbols of love, heart and soul to show the darkness that has been left behind by the man who she once loved and broke her heart without remorse.

Music is an important source that allows a person to share their thoughts, experiences, and messages of what they believe or what they think of the world around them. People listen to music to get their minds of a situation or to find strength through the message of the song as in the case of positive alternative. Symbols are used in songs to evoke certain emotions on the audience. Kutless uses these symbols sun and new beginning in “What Faith Can Do” to convey the idea of the power of faith and how our faith works in times of trouble. -Thalia

A wound is a profound cut that hurts; a cut that is hard to heal and can be caused physically or emotionally. It is very typical for writers to write songs about love and expressing your feelings toward that person. It is hard to express your feelings when it comes to love, but it is harder to express them when it comes to love and loss. In the song "My Immortal," by Evanescence she expresses her feeling of someone she loved but unfortunately lost. She speaks about pain, wounds, and how the pain doesn’t go away. When someone you love dies it is hard to not think of it, because memories practically live with you.

I was leisurely sitting in a garden full of flowers. Impressed with so much beauty I felt myself paralyzed, hard as a rock, unmovable. But then the slightest breeze of wind destroyed me; it turned me into ashes and blew me across the landscape. I died a beautiful death; luckily I was only dreaming. I am alive; I only slept and died a little. We all try to escape from the terror of knowing we will die. We lead our lives as if we were immortal; we ignore death but we cannot escape from it. What we all need to realize is that but always having death present, one can lead a more meaningful life. Life is like a song in progress, sometimes cheerful, sometimes gloomy; we play our song as we write it. Our life is our song; death can be a beautiful ending. The song “Stairway to Heaven,” through the use of symbols such a stairway to heaven and a lady leading you through the final journey , conveys the theme of death as being an inevitable part of life.

Love is something that changes your life forever. Many songs have love words in them that talk about their feelings. Songs are words that artists write down to show their feelings. It also has a meaning to what they are saying and want to express them to others. Music is valuable to people because it can relax people and take them to a different world. A symbol represents something that has a meaning. Artists use symbols to show what their songs are about. The artist uses the symbols love and dream to convey the theme of how the perfect match changes our lives.

Does everyone face the idea of prison at some point in their life? It seems at some point that everybody protects themselves in some way. A prison can be a way of people feeling locked up within themselves. For instance, they keep people at a distance as a way to protect themselves from hurt. People use music to convey messages to and about situations and life. In order to do this they use symbols, which are “image or a thing which acquire its symbolic value through the meanings and emotions it evokes in us” according to Stevens (p.12). In other words they use words that may invoke an image to a person so they invest emotionally in the song. Archetypes are like stereo types. They use a general meaning for a word that is universally understood to mean something. The song can convey these by using words like prison or love because they mean the same thing to everybody. The Eagles in “Hotel California” use prison to convey a lonely place as an archetype. They use desert as one symbol which can be seen as loneliness, they also use mirror which conveys not being able to do anything more than look back at the past because the future looks to lonely. One other symbol they use is running, which conveys escape from danger. The reality of life is that people tend to make themselves prisoners whether a little or a lot. People do this as a means of protection.

Sunshine is one of the most important things that we need in order to survive. Songs are a way that people express their feelings to the world. Music is a way to have fun and enjoy life. People listen to music to overcome their stress, to have fun, and to inspire themselves. People find music meaningful because the music relates to their lives. A symbol or archetype is a word that has a meaning in life. Songs use symbols or archetypes to help us define the meaning or message of a song. The song “pray” by Justin Bieber, uses the symbols of children, soldiers, crying, sunshine, rain, pain, broken, to let people know that there is hope to overcome problems and to never give up in life.

The heart is like glass (it is very fragile); once it is broken it is hard to put the pieces back together again. A broken heart is one condition that a doctor cannot even cure. No matter what gender or race, everyone has had a withered heart during their life. Music is therapy for the soul, which is used to cope with the struggles of life. To be more specific, songs use universal themes such as archetypes and symbols that people can identify with. Lauryn Hill’s song, “I Used to Love Him” illustrates the adverse effect of love, life, and light, which is transcended through symbols and archetypes

  33. Death is inevitable. We have all experienced the hurt and pain of death. Loosing a loved one is not an easy struggle. It is one of the hardest realities of life that we all must experience at one time or another. In the song, “If I die young”, by The Band Perry, the artist discusses the obvious hurt that death causes, but what is unique about this song is she is discussing her own death at a young life. Songs all have many different symbols, and this song is especially unique because the artists tells her audience of her unfinished business here, all that she wanted to do before dying and how hurtful it is to others when a loved one dies at a young age. The main symbol in “if I die young”, is capturing the essence of youth and death.

Eagles and Outlaws can represent many things to different people. David Allen Coe's song "Willie, Waylon, & Me" can also mean many different things to people who hear the song. Mostly the song is about different music bands and how they try to reach fame and notoriety for their music in different ways. Some of the bands try to be like eagles while others try to be outlaws in order to achieve fame and notoriety.

Music is an extremely powerful phenomenon; as songs have been known to produce thoughts and emotions from humans like no other medium has before. H.A. Overstreet believes this to be true for all humans as he said: “I have my own particular sorrows, loves, delights; and you have yours. But sorrow, gladness, yearning, hope, love, belong to all of us, in all times and in all places Music is the only means whereby we feel these emotions in their universality.” As humans, we turn to music as a form of therapy; as music can be used as an outlet, a stress reliever, a pick-me-up, or even just for motivation. Songs are so powerful because they convey certain messages through the use of symbols and archetypes that allow the listener to connect emotionally and better relate to whatever situation or trial they may be experiencing at the moment. In the song “I Hope You Dance,” by Lee Ann Womack, the main message that the artist is portraying through her lyrics is that life can be difficult, but to never give up, and that we should have faith and strive to persevere in life.

  36. What does freedom mean to you? We as humans have an innate sense of what freedom means to us, and most of us, until we reach a ripe age of twenty-one, can’t wait to be free. Later in life you might wonder why you wished so hard for time to fly. Freedom has many meanings, of which, are dependent on the individual’s own perception of the definition. When pondering freedom, it is essential to know which concept of freedom the definition is based upon: freedom of thought, freedom of expression, or freedom of speech. Music is a form of expression, and what better medium, for conveying thoughts feelings and emotions. Songs can be uplifting and give us inner importance. The lyrics might represent significant events in someone’s life. The words might be the same but could represent different occasions all together.
