Celestial Models

Hello All,

For this entry, describe the history of your name. Why did you parents give you this name? What does your name signify/mean?

For example, my last name, "Woodman," means that sometime in the past, an ancestor of mine was named for his occupation: he was a logger or wood distributor.

My first name, "Matthew" is Biblical and in Hebrew means "gift of God." However, the family story is that my father chose the name because of a character on the television show Gunsmoke: Marshall Matt Dillon.

In this case, my name has a number of competing "celestial models."

  2. My parents named me “Yoselin” because of my mother’s great-grandmother. Many people loved her because of her kindness, and beauty. Also, my name can be spelled in many different ways; however, my parents spelt it that way because of its pronunciation in Spanish.

OOOOHHH my name... I have not encountered one teacher that could pronounce it correctly. My mother chose my name because she just liked it. She saw and heard in a Spanish soap opera (novela). My first name and last name do not have a meaning or represent something or someone. :)

  5. My parents are immigrants from Mexico. My mom claims that the name “Amelia” was popular in the United States, and she thinks it’s a beautiful name. My dad wanted to name me after his sister. I am glad my mom won because I do not like my aunt’s name; instead I have my father’s last name. According the name dictionary, “Amelia” is of Latin and Old German origin, and its meaning is industrious, striving, and work.

  7. My name was given to me by my mother. She named me Jorge because she had a nephew, one of my cousins, who was named was Jorge. He was born with a physical disability, which was with a hunch back, and no one seemed to like him and a lot of other people would make fun of him because of his disability. My mom would always take care of him and loved him very much so she named me after him. I believe my name means farmer.

  8. I always joke around that my dad wasn't very original when he came up with my name. My first name is comprised of two words: April Joy. April was chosen because I was born in April, and my dad told me he chose Joy because they were happy I was alive -- I was born a pound and 12 ounces at birth, and at one point the doctors gave my parents the choice to abort me because I was life threatening to my mom. Needless to say, I'm ecstatic they didn't!

As to my last name, Garcera, I really have no idea what it means. Though I'm Filipino, I'm assuming it's of Spanish descent, not only because it sounds Spanish, but because of how Spain had ruled the Philippines for over 300 years.

  9. I was given the name Alessandra because my mother was watching "Josie and the Pussycats," which had a character by the name of Alex. She thought the character represented a strong and independent woman and she loved that name for a nickname. In the English version Alex is short for Alexandra but my mother did not like that name. She looked at the Spanish version, which is Alejandra but she did not want my Uncle Alejandro to think that I was named after him, therefore she did not want that name either. Finally, she found the Italian version, Alessandra, and thus I was named. Alessandra is the Italian feminine form of Alexandra, which means "protector of mankind." Contrary to how my mother chose my name, the nickname Alex was never used.

While she was pregnant with me, she suffered a serious fall and prayed to the Virgin Mary that everything would be fine. 12. My name was given to me by my mom. I really don't think 'Lizeth' has a meaning. She told me that when she was pregnant she would spend alot of time reading magazines to find names for me. When she gave birth, she said she had her list of all the names she had found but at the end she decided to named me Lizeth. My last name I really do not have an idea what it means I just know it comes from spanish descent.

  16. My name is Kimberlina Guerra Rodriguez. I just recently got married but before my change in last name I was Ms. Guerra, which is Spanish. The name means war and was used to describe those soldiers that returned home from war.
My first name does not have great meaning. Honestly, my parents named me of Kimberlina Road. The road is located north of Bakersfield when traveling on highway 99. They both liked it because it somewhat rhymed with my mother's name, Christina.

  17. My mom told me that she wanted to choose a name that people from our family did not have. She heard my name from a random person she met, and she really liked it. My last, Lopez, does not have a special meaning, but my other last name does have a special meaning in someway. My second last name is Martinez, but my grandfather told my mom that the Martinez last name comes from adoptive parents. My mom does not remember if it was my grandfather's grandfather or great-grandfather that lost both his parents when he was very young. The Martinez family adopted him and his siblings because they knew the family. Our last name should have been Nerio.

  19. The history of the name Jacqueline is the feminine for form for the the name Jacques which is a french form of James and Jacob derived from the Hebrew “ja'aqob” “supplanted” or “seized by the heel.” It also means to protect.

The reason why my parents gave me the name is because my dad like the Charlie Angel T.V. show and favored Jaclyn Smith character because she was smart, but mine is spelled differently because he didn't know how to spell it so i guess the nurse spelled it for him.

  21. My first name Denise was given to me by my mother because I was a girl. My father was only allowed to name the baby if it was a boy. The reason I was given the name Denise is because my mom before I was born use to take care of her best friends daughter and her name was Denise. My mom says that ever sense she hear that name she knew the next time she had a baby girl that was going to be her name.

My name is from french origin, and the meaning of Denise is a follower of Dionysius which is a God of wine.

The day I was born, they were extremely shocked to find out that I was a girl and because of that had not planned any girl names. Finally they agreed upon the name Danielle. The name Danielle, is the female version of Daniel from one of the books in the bible. Both Daniel & Danielle means "God is my judge." My last name, Mabon means "a youth" and is of french orgin.

  23. In Mexico the name Jose is common because of the Biblical characters Jesus, Mary and Joseph which Jose is derived from the name Joseph. I'm not sure why my parents named me Jose. If I would have to take a guess as to why my parens named me Jose, I would say for two reasons: my fathers name is Jose and for Biblical reasons.
